Created for teachers to get STEM into their classroom
"If you teach in a brick and mortar school or at home, I created this package to give you a solid starting point to introduce coding and the process I have used with my students for over 20 years. Take it and modify it as you need."
- Mr. Fred
Video tutorials
I have created a sequence of video tutorials that will instruct the student on how to learn the basics of SCRATCH.
SCRATCH is a block programming tool created by MIT that introduces coding (aka programming) concepts used by all programming languages.
The videos can be watched over and over with no limit and at YOUR OWN PACE.
More than watching videos, COLLABORATE
Coding can be done alone. But it can also be done in teams and groups. Have your students work together!!
Create STORYBOARDS together. "PITCH" their idea to the classroom. Take turns building their code.
I have seen amazing things happen in the coding lab when young people work together on coding projects.
Coding can be one of the most creative and collaborative processes.
Video Tutorials
Basic to Advanced Concepts
There are 9 video tutorials that I created. These are the ones you can use to code a story and begin making a bigger coding project. The tutorials focus on SCRATCH whcih is FREE and does NOT require a download. It runs in your web browser.
NOTE: Look for other coding tutorials coming soon!!!
Challenge and Reflect
"What can you do?"
The videos guide you and then you get to try someting on your own by being prompted with a challenge. Challenge completed? Whether successful or not, REFLECT on what happened and disucss.
Day to Day Schedule
A Starting Point or Complete
Follow my 5 day schedule or modify it to make it your own. Contains activities broken down by the hours it took me to cover. Once again...MAKE IT YOUR OWN.
Storyboard Template
Template and Example
Use my .pdf template that captures the flow of activities. Storyboarding is used by industry professionals to get the ideas out of their heads in order to think them through.
Badges
Gamification Built In
Having gamified numerous projects in my classroom, I provided a sequence of badges learners can be given to motivate them to keep going!
The Coding Kit Includes:
It is a 21 page .pdf download that contains the instructions to build a Coding Lab for ages 8yrs to 12 yrs old (but you can use with older learners too). Includes instructions to use the storyboard, conduct an "Idea Pitch", and how to use the video tutorials with challenge and reflection questions.
I
have taught in higher education for almost two decades, after school
STEM programs, and weekend tutoring where I apply a lifetime of
experience as a software & database developer, website designer,
project manager, and entrepreneur.
Learning new technology
never gets old as I continue to sharpen my skills and inspire the next
generation of technologists whether in the classroom, home, camp,
tutoring, or over coffee.
